Compare the commitment, not the headcount.
Ask each provider to show who is assigned, their agreed hours, your shared decision window, review responsibilities and what you retain at handover. Then compare proposals against the same first deliverable. A senior developer with supporting engineering and project management may be a useful model; the job titles alone do not tell you how much work is available.
Use this guide to evaluate us too. It is our proposed decision process, not a claim that a particular team structure guarantees delivery or growth. If your current constraint is finding suitable buyers, hiring engineers may not be the first move. Start with the growth bottleneck diagnostic.
01 / GIVE BOTH TEAMS THE SAME PROBLEM
Start with a workflow your customer needs.
Write a short brief: who needs the change, what they should be able to do, what exists today and what must remain intact. Include the relevant stack, integrations, access constraints and who on your side can answer questions. Separate a desired date from a verified estimate.
For example, “a new account can import its first valid dataset, see rejected rows and safely retry” is reviewable. “Improve the platform” is not. Agree how to check success and what is out of scope. Where the cause is uncertain, buy a bounded investigation before committing to a large build. Our technical audit checklist helps organise that evidence.
A dedicated team suits ongoing work with someone available to prioritise it. A tightly bounded project may fit a scoped delivery engagement; a single skills gap may fit one specialist. Ask which model solves your actual problem before choosing a team size.
02 / ASK FOR SOMETHING YOU CAN INSPECT
Six checks for a dedicated SaaS development team.
01
People and capacity
- Ask
- Who will work on this product, for how many hours, and on what responsibilities?
- Request evidence
- An agreed role allocation, named technical lead, relevant work discussion with the actual engineers, and written rules for assignment changes.
- Resolve before committing
- Three job titles presented as three full-time people without specifying hours or review commitments.
02
Working hours and decisions
- Ask
- When can we make a decision together, and what happens outside that window?
- Request evidence
- A shared calendar with explicit time zones, decision owners, asynchronous handoff format and an escalation route. Account for holidays and daylight-saving changes.
- Resolve before committing
- An overlap promise that names no hours, or an assumption that ordinary overlap includes round-the-clock support.
03
Technical judgement and review
- Ask
- Who challenges the implementation, and who can approve a release?
- Request evidence
- A walkthrough of a relevant technical decision, a small representative change with acceptance checks, and named review and release responsibilities. Agree approved tools and handling of confidential inputs.
- Resolve before committing
- Seniority justified only by years on a CV, or a demo with no explanation of tests, limitations and recovery.
04
Accounts, access and deliverables
- Ask
- Can our authorised team operate the product if this engagement ends?
- Request evidence
- A register of repositories, infrastructure, domains and third-party dependencies; buyer-controlled administration where practical; scoped access and written ownership and licensing terms.
- Resolve before committing
- The provider alone controls an essential account, or the proposal leaves ownership and dependency licences unresolved.
05
Acceptance and progress
- Ask
- What behaviour will we review, with which data and in which environment?
- Request evidence
- A bounded delivery brief, observable acceptance checks, visible risks and a demo of the real workflow, including an unsuccessful path. Keep customer outcomes separate from tickets closed.
- Resolve before committing
- A velocity target without scope, or a payment milestone defined only as development complete.
06
Continuity and exit
- Ask
- What happens when someone is absent, replaced, or the contract finishes?
- Request evidence
- A coverage plan, replacement and notice terms, setup instructions, work-in-progress inventory and a handover exercise by another authorised person.
- Resolve before committing
- A replacement promise with no knowledge transfer, or a handover that consists only of sending a ZIP file.
Use an authorised, small assessment relevant to the work. Discuss existing material the engineer has permission to share, or agree a paid trial with scope and ownership defined. Do not ask for another client’s source code or confidential records. Resolve contract and intellectual-property terms with suitable advice for your situation.
03 / MAKE THE HOURS COMPARABLE
Three roles do not automatically mean three full-time people.
Illustrative comparison: Proposal A includes a senior engineer for 24 hours, a supporting engineer for 16 hours and a project manager for 4 hours per week. That is 40 engineering hours plus 4 coordination hours. Proposal B includes one engineer for 40 hours, with project coordination supplied by the buyer. Neither is automatically better.
In Proposal A, suppose the senior engineer’s 24 hours include 6 hours of review and technical planning. The remaining 18 hours are available for other engineering work under that assumption. Do not add those 6 review hours again. The supporting engineer’s work may depend on the senior’s review; it is not necessarily a separate stream that can ship independently. Proposal B may require more founder coordination and have less cover during absence. Actual output depends on the task, experience and dependencies, not just the sum.
Put overlap on the calendar.
For an illustrative UTC+0 customer, a 13:00–15:00 UTC decision window is 18:00–20:00 in Pakistan at UTC+5. Confirm those hours with the actual people and check seasonal clock changes in the customer’s location. Two hours of shared availability is a collaboration window, not two additional engineering hours or a promise of emergency coverage.
Compare the whole arrangement.
Record fees, included role hours, exclusions, buyer-side work, coverage and change terms. Keep currencies and billing periods consistent. When scope or capacity differs, mark the price comparison incomplete. Do not turn an illustrative annual package into a claim of equivalent output or guaranteed savings against a local salary.
These figures are invented to explain the calculation. They are not SIP staffing commitments, industry benchmarks or client results.
04 / KEEP THE UNKNOWNS VISIBLE
Use evidence, not an impressive total score.
The worksheet starts every criterion as Unconfirmed. Record each provider’s answer, the evidence you inspected, what remains unclear, who will resolve it and the review date. Move an item to Confirmed only when the evidence supports the specific commitment. Mark Not applicable with a reason.
- Proceed: the important commitments are evidenced, the first scope is reviewable and both sides can support delivery.
- Clarify or run a bounded trial: a material unknown can be resolved without exposing the existing product to unnecessary disruption.
- Pause: ownership, critical access, assignment or acceptance remains unresolved. A low price does not close that gap.
Set the next review around a small real deliverable: can the team explain the change, demonstrate the agreed workflow, recover from a relevant failure and leave usable instructions? Revisit capacity and priorities when the work changes. A signed proposal is the beginning of the operating relationship.

A senior lead, supporting engineer and project manager.
Our dedicated development model combines senior technical direction, supporting implementation and project coordination. We agree each role’s capacity, working hours, responsibilities and time-zone overlap in writing. Assigned resources are allocated to your engagement rather than split across other client projects.
The website’s US$40,000 annual example is subject to agreed scope, allocation and commercial terms. It does not imply three full-time employees or a universal fixed price. Ask us for the same allocation, ownership and acceptance evidence you would request from any provider. See our technical systems and delivery service.
We also consider whether we align with the founder and believe in the product. A useful partnership needs an honest discussion of fit, the work and the people who will own decisions. Building toward $100k MRR is the ambition; staffing alone cannot guarantee it.
